Concerts, record launchings, and keynote speeches will be held in the capital from Monday to Sunday to celebrate the Day of Cuban Son, this year dedicated to the 135th birthday of Ignacio Piñeiro.
The festivities, to be held at Havana’s Pabellón Cuba cultural center, will also pay tribute to two other great Cuban musicians who cultivated this genre: Adalberto Alvarez and Cesar “Pupy” Pedroso, who would be celebrating their 75th birthdays.
The Hermanos Saíz Association, which brings together Cuba’s young artists, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the National Center for Popular Music, the Cuban Institute of Music, the Ignacio Piñeiro Center, EGREM and Artex record companies, organized the event.
Musicologist Yurién Heredía of the Center for Research and Development of Cuban Music will give a keynote speech about the Cuban Son and its declaration as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity at Salon de Mayo of the downtown facility this Monday at 14:00 hours, local time.
Musicologist Neris González Bello will give a master lecture about the life and work of Álvarez, also known in Cuba as “The Gentleman of Son” at 16:00 hours, local time. Later, his orchestra along with renowned country ballad cultivator Alexis Díaz Pimienta will give a concert at Pabellón Cuba’s central stage.
May 8 declaration to celebrate “son” music will be a worthy seal of identity as part of the legacy of its great exponents Miguel Matamoros and Miguelito Cuní, the Cuban Institute of Music stated.
