With vast experience in the world of fashion design and an ever-rising career, Ismael de la Caridad is today one of the most outstanding costume creators in Cuba, and has reached way beyond the country’s borders.

Known around the world, De la Caridad, a designer for some four decades now, has won numerous awards for his magnificent work, including Mexico’s National Fashion Award.

He presented his most recent collection, &Pétalos de mi alma," at the closing ceremony of the San Remo Music Awards Festival, at the capital’s Hotel Nacional de Cuba. It had a great impact on the audience, as it reinforces the national roots and identity.

I participated in the San Remo Cuba Festival. A nice experience as we shared it with an Italian designer and it was also a collection made with all the taste, love and variants of Cuban craftsmanship. The Trinidadian embroiderers were present. Over time I traveled around the island and collected the handicrafts of each place: Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, Holguín, Trinidad…," he told CubaPLUS Magazine.

That collection has a lot to do with Cuba and also our climate, with the beauty of our archipelago. Other artisans should see those things to do the same. It’s a great idea to rescue our roots and our identity," he said.

In this regard, De la Caridad, who also presented a collection during the final gala of the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of Havana, mentioned the work done on the life and work of the late Cuban star entertainer Rosita Fornés.

I have many memories of Rosita. I was her head designer for more than 30 years. I was also her executor. I have custody of all her work and I think when the pandemic ends we will have a museum about her work and her life, in which I will have a lot of work to do," he said.

I plan to do similar work with various prominent national figures, since I have a very interesting collection of more than 300 dresses used by important figures of Cuban culture, which is a great legacy for the country’s history of art," he said.
