Results in the health sector of the central Cuban province of Sancti Spíritus, mark today relevant advances, among them in the treatment of cancer patients.
According to Prensa Latina, in the Chemotherapy room of the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital, this disease in non-small cells in advanced stages is treated with the Cuban vaccine CIMAvax-EGF®, the only one of its kind in the world. The drug, produced by the Molecular Immunology Center, is administered to patients, after verifying whether they meet the requirements to receive the immunogen.
Currently, patients with lung cancer in Sancti Spíritus achieve a survival rate of more than 85 percent and improve their quality of life. According to Yeslyn Marín, president of the Sancti Spíritus Chapter of Oncology, lung cancer is the leading cause of death from oncological diseases in the territory.
Since 2010 to date, more than 310 cases diagnosed with non-small cell carcinoma, indiscriminately, have received the vaccine in both primary and secondary care, she said. She commented that its use is hospital-based and free, and is applied only in the Chemotherapy room of the Camilo Cienfuegos Hospital, where around 70 people with this type of tumor attend.
Specialists recognize that Carmen Vargas is one of the patients from Sancti Spiritus with the longest survival rate from this condition. Prescribed with the disease in 2018 and thanks to treatment for almost seven years with the Cuban vaccine, she maintains a high survival rate; at 63 years old, she feels active in her functions as an engineer at the Agricultural Projects Company.
In conversation with the press, she said that she began to breathe again when the oncologists began the treatment with chemotherapy and proposed that she receive the CIMAvax-EGF® vaccine. Regarding the results, she was brief and precise: It has been a long road that has been worth it, to live one day is to live many years.
In 2020, the World Health Organization recognized that this type of cancer was the second cause of death, with a predominance in the female sex, white-skinned people, people over 60 years of age, retirees and smokers.
